Habitat for Humanity PEI aims to be sustainable in every sense of the word. We work towards sustainable homes, a sustainable program to help Island families and a sustainable world.
Our homes are built to be simple, decent and affordable. We use energy star rated windows and appliances, low-e windows, insulation levels above building code, compact fluorescent lights, under-slab insurance and environmentally responsible finishes.
Our homeownership program is unique in many ways; not the least of which being that it helps to sustain itself through what we call the revolving “Fund for Humanity”. Every interest free mortgage payment made by our partner families gets re-invested into building the next home. Each homeowner who partners with Habitat for Humanity PEI is “paying it forward” to all future Habitat for Humanity homeowners.
The Habitat for Humanity PEI ReStore diverted approximately 250 tonnes of waste from landfills last year alone by accepting your donations of new and gently used household goods and building supplies. The proceeds from the sale of these items is helping to administer the programs of Habitat for Humanity PEI. The ReStore has also collected and received donations of approximately $28, 000 dollars worth of recyclable cans and bottles in the last three years for the ” 5 cents = a home” campaign. That’s around 560,000 cans and bottles diverted from landfills in the last three years!
