Board of Directors
Purpose: The Board of Directors is the legal authority for Habitat for Humanity PEI. As a member of the Board, a Director acts in a position of trust for the community and is responsible for the effective governance of the organization.

Responsible to: The Board Chair

Time Commitment:
Attend monthly Board meetings and on need basis; 6 – 10 hours per month (includes Board preparation, meeting and committee meeting time and special projects)

Job Duration:
Elected by the membershipat the Annual General Meeting, Directors serve for a three-year term. Directors may be re-elected for two consecutive terms. Upon the resignation of a director in mid-term the Board may elect a replacement Director to fill the position until the next Annual General Meeting.

Location: HFH PEI Office – 365 Mt Edward Rd Charlottetown PEI

Position Duties:

  • Attend monthly Board meetings
  • Promote the services and programs of Habitat for Humanity PEI and publicly support them
  • Prepare for and participate in the discussions and the deliberations of the Board
  • Be aware and abstain from any conflict of interest

Duty of Care: Making Informed Decisions

  • Become well educated about Habitat for Humanity PEI and its programs so as to make informed decisions
  • Establish overall long and short term strategic goals, objectives and priorities for Habitat for Humanity PEI in meeting the needs of the community

Duty of Loyalty: Maintaining Accountability

  • Act in good faith and in a manner that does not harm the organization to the benefit of a Director or Officer
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Ensure the affairs of the organization are conducted legally and responsibly
  • Employ, evaluate and nurture the Executive Director, who employs and evaluates other staff
  • Employ, evaluate and nurture the ReStore Manager, who employs and evaluates other staff
  • Encourage staff development to ensure effective stewardship of the organization

Duty of Obedience: Assuring Health and Growth

  • Act within the requirements of the law and according to Habitat’s mission, bylaws, rules and regulations
  • Promote Habitat for Humanity PEI involvement through community networking etc.
  • Secure funds necessary to finance the affiliate’s operations by giving money and by raising money and in-kind donations
  • Being accountable to the funders/donors for the services provided and fund expended
  • Governing Habitat for Humanity PEI by the broad policies developed by the Board
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of Habitat through a regular review of programs and services
  • Be responsible to the Board Chair and the Executive Director once the Board meeting adjourns
  • Being accountable and seeking nominations for election to the Board when appropriate
  • Prepare for and participate in the discussions and the deliberations of the Board
  • Foster a positive working relationship with other Board members and staff

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Understanding of the Habitat for Humanity philosophy and the desire to promote it
  • Knowledge and skills in one or more areas of Board governance: policy, finance, programs and/or personnel
  • Reputation for integrity, ability to keep commitments and demonstrate flexibility
  • The ability to honour confidentiality
  • Ability to interpret a financial report
  • Commitment to the work of the organization
