Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward Island celebrates handing over the keys to two new families

June 18, 2024

Harrington, Prince Edward Island – Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward Island handed over the keys to its two newest Habitat homeowners. Habitat Prince Edward Island broke ground on these projects on April 28, 2023. Since then, numerous individuals have volunteered their time on the build sites alongside CP Construction, and many other dedicated contractors.

“Please welcome our two newest Habitat homeowners Taleb and Kifah, and Jane Ellen. Both families strive to foster supportive environments for their growing children and support their children’s endeavours and future goals. They have worked hard to demonstrate to their children that overcoming challenges is possible and can lead to achieving your goals. Through their commitment to work, family, community, and volunteer effort, they have demonstrated their dedication to Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward Island and their drive to attain affordable homeownership. We are excited to welcome Taleb, Kifah, Jane Ellen and their families to Habitat for Humanity PEI and we look forward to supporting them along this journey of affordable homeownership.” Bev Beaton, Habitat Prince Edward Island Homeowner Services Manager

Habitat Homeowners are selected based on need, their ability to pay, and their commitment to volunteer 500 hours toward their home and community.

Integral to this build is support from the Government of Canada. Since 2019, the Government of Canada has made a total funding commitment of $447,000 through the Affordable Housing Fund under the National Housing Strategy towards Habitat Prince Edward Island projects, including these Harrington homes.

“Organizations like Habitat for Humanity are invaluable partners in our work to ensure that every Canadian has a safe place to call their own,” said Heath MacDonald, Member of Parliament for Malpeque. “I am proud that we were able to support these projects in Malpeque, and I wish these two families all the best as they start their next chapters in their new homes.”

In March 2023, the Government of Canada and Habitat for Humanity Canada announced an additional $25 million investment to build 500 new affordable homes across Canada over the next three years. This brings the total federal investment in Habitat for Humanity to $80.8 million the Government of Canada’s Affordable Housing Fund.
