Press Release: Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward Island celebrates the groundbreaking of four new homes in the community of Harrington.
Prince Edward Island – On June 27th, 2024, Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward Island celebrated the
groundbreaking of four new homes in Harrington, PE. One of these homes is made possible by the Province of
Prince Edward Island’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure, through a home donation and re-location.
We are excited to be working with Holmes Construction and many other dedicated contractors for the completion of these homes.
“We are excited to embark on this journey to build a brighter future for four local families,” said Pam Montgomery, Chief Executive Officer of Habitat for Humanity PEI. “This project exemplifies the power of community coming together to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. We are deeply grateful for the support of our volunteers and partners who make our work possible.”
Integral to this build is support from the Government of Canada. Since 2019, the Government of Canada has made
a total funding commitment of $447,000 through the Affordable Housing Fund under the National Housing Strategy towards Habitat Prince Edward Island projects, including these homes.
“Organizations like Habitat for Humanity are invaluable partners as we work to tackle the housing crisis and ensure that every Canadian has a place to call their own,” said the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure, and Communities. “I am proud that we could support these new houses and I wish these families the very best as they start their new chapters.”
In March 2023, the Government of Canada and Habitat for Humanity Canada announced an additional $25 million investment to build 500 new affordable homes across Canada over the next three years. This brings the total federal investment in Habitat for Humanity to $80.8 million the Government of Canada’s Affordable Housing Fund.
Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward Island is currently soliciting applications from families for these four homes.
Pre-applications can be submitted online, through our website www.habitatpei.ca.
Families for Habitat for Humanity homes are selected on the basis of need, their ability to repay a no-down payment mortgage, and their commitment to volunteer 500 hours toward their home and community.
