Prince Edward Island – On November 28th, 2024, Habitat for Humanity PEI handed over the keys to its newest Habitat Homeowners in Georgetown, PEI. Habitat for Humanity PEI broke ground on this project on October 7th, 2022. Since then, numerous individuals volunteered their time on the build site alongside Premier Island Homes, Anchored Construction, and many other dedicated contractors. Special thanks to the Provincial Government and many other donors for their financial contributions to this project.
“Please welcome our newest Habitat Homeowners, Russel and Edenyl’s family. They have worked hard to overcome challenges and achieve their goals. Through their commitment to bettering themselves and the lives of their children, and with their genuine efforts and work ethic, they have demonstrated their dedication to Habitat for Humanity PEI. Their family fell in love with the community of Georgetown and were immediately welcomed. They have found a sense of home and belonging in Georgetown and believe in giving back and supporting others. We are excited to welcome Russel and Edenyl’s family to Habitat for Humanity PEI and we look forward to supporting them along this journey of affordable homeownership.” Bev Beaton, Habitat PEI Homeowner Services Manager
Habitat Homeowners are selected based on need, their ability to pay, and their commitment to volunteer 500 hours toward their home and community.
Since 2019, the Government of Canada has made a total funding commitment of $447,000 through the Affordable Housing Fund under the National Housing Strategy towards Habitat PEI projects, including this home.
“Organizations like Habitat for Humanity are vitally important partners as we work to tackle the housing crisis and ensure that every Canadian has a safe place to call their own,” said Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Member of Parliament for Cardigan. “I’m so pleased that we could support this new home in Georgetown and I wish Russell and Edenyl’s family the very best as they start their new chapter.”
In March of 2023, the Government of Canada and Habitat for Humanity Canada announced an additional $25 million investment to build 500 new affordable homes across Canada over the next three years. This brings the total federal investment in Habitat for Humanity to $80.8 million through the Government of Canada’s Affordable Housing Fund.
