Press Release: Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward Island celebrates handing over the keys to two new families in Souris, PE.
Prince Edward Island – On November 30th, Habitat for Humanity PEI handed over the keys to its newest Habitat Homeowners in Souris, PE. Habitat for Humanity PEI broke ground on this project on October 7th, 2022. Since then, numerous individuals volunteered their time on the build site alongside Premier Island Homes and many other dedicated contractors.
“Please welcome our two newest Habitat Homeowners Jamie and Mandy and their young family and Dawn and her family. Both families have worked hard, at times holding down multiple jobs to provide for and support their families. As young parents both Jamie and Mandy, and Dawn are focused on providing a supportive and nourishing home environment. Through their commitment to work, family, community, and volunteer effort, they have demonstrated their dedication to Habitat for Humanity PEI and drive to attain homeownership. We are excited to welcome Jamie, Mandy, and their children and Dawn and her children to Habitat for Humanity PEI and we look forward to supporting them along this journey of affordable homeownership.” Bev Beaton, Habitat PEI Homeowner Services Manager
Families for Habitat for Humanity homes are selected on the basis of need, their ability to repay a no-down payment, no-interest mortgage, and their commitment to volunteer 500 hours toward their home and community.
Through the National Housing Strategy, the Government of Canada has invested $100,000 into these homes, bringing Habitat for Humanity one-step closer to creating 1,117 new affordable homes across Canada.
“I’m so proud to see projects like this come to life. The National Housing Strategy is making a real difference here in PEI, and through new federal investments like our $4 billion Housing Accelerator Fund, which is helping build more than 100,000 new homes across Canada, we’re delivering real results so more folks have a safe place to call home.”
– The Honourable Lawrence Macaulay, Member of Parliament for Cardigan, Prince Edward Island.
In March 2023, the Government of Canada and Habitat for Humanity Canada announced an additional $25 million investment to build 500 new affordable homes across Canada over the next three years. This brings the total federal investment in Habitat for Humanity to $80.8 million through the Government of Canada’s National Housing Co-Investment Fund.
